by John Allen Mollenhauer, Lifestyle Coach JAM Excellence originates from having energy, health, and the capacity to perform well without having to burn out or trade one's health for success, which compromises one's ability to live with Excellence. It is sustained when you have developed a high-performance lifestyle or 'HPL.' Not everybody will live a high-performance lifestyle, but anybody can take an HPL from theory to practice to mastery in their own life. If you asked 100 people if they would like to live a life of higher personal or professional achievement, 90+% would likely say YES. Whether they do comes down to how they get there. Do you have a results-only mindset or a mindset focused on a high-performance lifestyle plus the goal-specific actions that result in what you want to achieve? The difference could not be more profound. Let me give you a few high-profile examples from the world of sports. Though, what I'm saying applies just as much to you as an entrepreneur, business owner, professional, and homemaker. It does not matter if you are into sports or even a fitness enthusiast.
Many consider Tom Brady intense, maybe even crazy, for his unusual/atypical lifestyle behaviors and focus. The thing is, he's still playing A-game football at 45 for a reason. Lance Armstrong was viewed as an American Outlaw for working to push beyond his physical limits. Derek Jeter was seen as the sports definition of PERFECT. All are high achievers, but for them, they had something most other top athletes did not. They had an HPL high-performance mindset and lifestyle approach to achieving their goals, resulting in GOAT status. Many athletes who never achieve at the level they are capable of are not that different from everyday working people who don't fulfill their potential. They train hard for a season and have sports training (analogous to personal or professional development), but they never develop a high-performance lifestyle. I'm talking about the lifestyle they need to actualize and optimize their approach fully, and that's the difference between becoming the GOAT in your own life (aka living your best self, version of you, life, etc.) and being an average achiever type. Healthy, high-achieving entrepreneurs I work with view themselves as elite athletes, even though the last time they suited up may have been for a high school sport or Wednesday night basketball at the neighborhood gym. Nonetheless, once an athlete, always an athlete, and if you don't have an athletic background, keep in mind "if you have a body, you are an athlete;" prepare once for a 5k walk or run, and you'll quickly get it. Being an athlete is not just about physicality but your mentality and lifestyle, which is all about how you achieve your goals, and it keeps evolving till the end with an intent to succeed; you never give up. It is a mentality the average achiever does not have. So focused on success outcomes alone, devoid of any significant understanding of human performance and the lifestyle it translates to, they fizzle out, burn out and wear out prematurely. Worse, they're relegated to a life of trying to succeed while coping with habits that result in lifestyle-induced diseases that further distract and hold them back. Can HPL be taught? Learned? Yes, this author, entrepreneur, and a family man had to learn how, after years on the average achiever path himself despite being very capable. HPL is taught or learned through immersing yourself in The 5 Core Essentials of Human Performance©, starting with learning how to Manage Your Energy Like a Pro®. You must immerse yourself in the teachings, the presence, and the lifestyle that yields the level of energy and spiritual freedom, ever-better health, and higher performance you want and need to succeed and sustain that success. Where are you at in your journey to optimize your lifestyle and ultimately create HPL excellence in your own life? Have you lost your edge? Has your ax become dull? Are you tired? Remember, "When you lose your natural drive and start accepting your behaviors (even though they are not winning behaviors), you have started the process of performance decline." You cannot expect Excellence if you settle for daily choices of mediocrity. Always on and working until your body shuts down, living a life that is not balanced, eating nutrient-poor diets, endlessly skipping your workouts, and being overwhelmed is not sustainable. You will lose that game. Living HPL is about sharpening your ax daily, finding your drive, and training that 6th sense for what's next as the action you can take to function and perform better so you can also take the precise steps that achieve your goals. Preparing for the challenges that await you ahead, the challenges you know nothing about, will create mental and physical fortitude that will drive you through your darkest hours and days and provide a strong enough light to move others. Don't underestimate your light, your energy. Managing Your Energy Like a Pro is the first core essential of human performance because your energy is what's driving you. That is what we should have learned from the beginning, what we should be learning from elite sports athletes and other healthy high achievers around us, before all the quick quotes of philosophy. It's what we should have learned early in schooling but didn't. Left to think Excellence is from the neck up or due to rare talent, most of us have missed the most foundational level of development. It's developing a high-performance mindset and lifestyle. HPL is for those who seek more out of themselves without falling victim to society's demands, false realities, or the cultural stories about working yourself to the bone to prove your worthiness. I share this with you today with a tip of the cap to those learning to live with higher levels of discipline while still enjoying their quality of life. That can be you. You'll find yourself on the wrong side of the bell curve if you are not. ___________________________________________ As “client zero,” entrepreneur John Allen Mollenhauer, known as John Allen or Lifestyle Coach “JAM,” was desperate to figure out how to achieve his ambitious goals without burning out, wearing out, and trading his health for success despite being proficient in nutrition and fitness.
