Assisted Living Communities provide a safe, somewhat supervised environment for people who want assistance with meals, housekeeping, laundry, transportation as well as support with activities of daily living (ADLs). This can include things like dressing, bathing, grooming and toileting. Medication Management is another important service offered. Assisted Living Communities also have multiple opportunities for socialization.
Memory Care Communities make available many of the amenities and services of an Assisted Living Community but typically have more supervision and a higher level of caregiver involvement when aiding with ADLs. Activities are geared toward people with varying levels of cognitive impairment. These communities are secure to prevent wandering. Independent Living is ideal for active seniors who may find that meal preparation, housekeeping and planned activities will make their lives more enjoyable and manageable. A Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) is a senior living option based on a medical model. Those requiring medical interventions or who are recovering from an illness or injury can receive proper care at this type of facility. Assisted Livings and Memory Care communities are not able to address certain medical needs like IV therapies, feeding tubes and wound care. That is when a SNF is the answer. There is much more to each type of community than what I have described here. And there are differences between the communities within each category.
