Family Promise of Morris County to host the third annual Steve Hammond Homebound Hustle 5K & 1 Mile Walk on Nov. 4

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ – On Saturday, November 4, Family Promise of Morris County is hosting its third annual Homebound Hustle 5K & 1 Mile Walk. All funds raised through the Homebound Hustle will benefit families and individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in Morris County. The agency has served this population for over three decades, as homelessness is a persistent issue in the community. “Even before the pandemic, homelessness existed in Morris County. It may not be visible, but it exists,” said Family Promise CEO Joann Bjornson, LSW. ​

She continues, “Many that we serve are housing insecure or living with friends and family; this is due to the lack of affordable housing, low employment wages, the high cost of living, and increased health needs in our community, among other factors.”

Family Promise’s Shelter, Housing, and Outreach Programs aim to ensure long-term housing stability and positive health, wellness, and economic outcomes for those served. On Nov. 4, community members can join the agency in raising awareness and funds for those negatively impacted by the housing and health crisis in Morris County.

This year marks the 18th consecutive year of multinational law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP’s support of the human services agency and the third as a naming event sponsor. The Steve Hammond Homebound Hustle 5K & 1 Mile Walk honors the legacy of Stephen W. Hammond, Morris County’s longtime Director of Public Works and County Engineer and later Board of Trustees President for Family Promise of Morris County. The event serves as a reminder of his leadership and positive impact within our community.

Event Details: Participants can register to run or walk Central Park of Morris County’s scenic cross-country trail or join the race virtually. A new option this year, participants can also register as a team. On race day, check in and on-site registration will take place from 9:00 am to 9:45 a.m. The 5K Run will begin at 10 a.m. and the 1 Mile Walk will begin at 10:15 a.m., to be followed by an awards ceremony with light refreshments. There is a $35 registration fee; the agency is offering an early-bird rate of $30 until September 30.

The Navigating Hope mobile outreach unit will be present on Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. A partnership with Family Promise and the Morris County Department of Human Services, Navigating Hope provides essential services, such as housing support and benefits screenings, in hard-to-reach places across all 39 Morris County municipalities.
