CCMUA - Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority
The County Regional Wastewater Treatment System treats the sewage discharged every day from properties in Camden County. The Camden County MUA treats 60 to 90 million gallons of sewage per day at the plant, the Delaware N°1 Water Pollution Control Facility. This flow travels through 135 miles (215 kilometers) of pipe assisted by 27 pump stations. The CCMUA was required to construct these facilities by the United States Environmental Protection Agency to bring Camden County into compliance with the Federal Clean Water Act.
Implementing a dual fuel (Natural Gas & Biogas) CHP system has given the possibility to CCMUA to get green, local and reliable power over a long period with absolute control on its finances.
Other benefits include a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, creation of local jobs, reduction in local transportation, supply of clean water and restoration of streams and rivers to be enjoyed by the residents, fish, and wildlife of Camden County.
Resilience in water and wastewater utilities is fundamental because power loss can have devastating impacts on them and the communities they serve. For wastewater utilities, pump failure may lead to direct discharge of untreated sewage to rivers and streams or sewage backup into homes and businesses. Power loss can also impact water utilities through cascading infrastructure failures.
