Why the Business World Needs to Stop Putting Energy Last

Why the Business World Needs to Stop Putting Energy Last: The Energy-First Path™
As a member of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce, I spend a lot of time around business owners, professionals, entrepreneurs and service providers. We talk about growing our businesses, finding customers, managing people, improving productivity and making better use of our time.

But there's one business resource I don't think we talk about nearly enough: Our energy.
In business, we're taught to manage almost everything: money, time, people, technology, customers, productivity and growth. Yet virtually all of it ultimately depends upon the energy and capacity of the people doing the work.

And business culture often teaches us to put that energy last. We work first, produce first, solve the problem first, meet the deadline first and take care of everyone else first. Then, if there's anything left in the battery—or any room left in the calendar—we recover.

For capable, ambitious people, that can work surprisingly well for a long time. I've certainly lived it myself. When you're building businesses, raising a family, serving customers and carrying significant responsibility, there's almost always a legitimate reason to keep going. And if you're good at pushing through fatigue, the world often rewards you for doing exactly that.

But there's an obvious problem with this model:

Everything we're trying to accomplish depends upon the energy and capacity of the person doing it.

That's why I believe it's time for a different approach in business—especially now that Personal Energy Infrastructure™ is making it increasingly possible to intentionally support the energy and capacity we depend on.

It's time to put energy first.

Introducing The Energy-First Path™

The Energy-First Path™ is the practical framework I created to help people move from putting energy last to putting it first. It grew out of a simple realization—one I came to after tiring, burning and wearing myself out more than a few times along the way: most capable people don't just need another nutrition plan, fitness program or productivity strategy. They need a better way to understand, restore and manage the personal energy all of those things depend upon.

The Path begins by helping people recognize and recover from Personal Energy Debt™. From there, they establish a protocol designed to support the body’s natural energy production, create a rhythm for restoring and renewing energy—weekly, build Personal Energy Infrastructure™ to expand capacity, and ultimately learn how to manage their energy like a pro.

I created it to take what we've learned about recovery and human performance and make it practical in everyday life—so people can restore energy, expand capacity, have the energy they need when they need it, function and live a lifestyle that performs well, and still have enough energy left to enjoy the life they're working so hard to create.

Over the past 30 years, my work has centered on human energy and performance—what enables people to function well, expand and maintain their capacity, and live a full life.

Health is obviously foundational to that. That your lifestyle is healthy is a given, not the goal. If the way you're living continually undermines your health, eventually your ability to function and perform “well,”—at higher capacities—as a professional, entrepreneur, executive, parent, weekend warrior, or simply as a human being—will suffer.

But energy is different because we tend to take it for granted—until it isn't there.

We carefully manage financial capital. We protect important assets. We schedule our time down to the minute. Yet most of us have never developed a meaningful strategy for managing the personal energy all of those activities require. As a result, too many people overspend their energy, sacrifice their health and quality of life in pursuit of success—only to find that success itself becomes increasingly difficult to sustain.

That's the problem I'm addressing with The Energy-First Path™.

The intention is straightforward: help people move from putting energy last to putting energy first—and show them how to actually do it in the context of a busy, ambitious life.

This isn't about becoming less driven. It's about developing the energy and capacity to function and live a lifestyle (notice the reference to your lifestyle not you) that prevents you from continually running yourself into the ground—and ultimately, enjoying a better quality of life for longer.

What Years at Regenus Center Taught Me

A major part of this idea grew out of our experience at Regenus Center.

Across tens of thousands of recovery sessions using advanced red-light therapy and photobiomodulation and other advanced rejuvenation and recovery technologies, we've helped people establish BioVitality Protocols™ as a core part of their lifestyle—not just nutrition and fitness plans. In the process, we've worked with countless business owners, professionals, executives, entrepreneurs, parents and other highly capable people.

And one pattern has become increasingly difficult to ignore:
Many people aren't lacking motivation or discipline. They've simply become remarkably good at functioning while depleted.

That observation led me to what I call Personal Energy Debt™: the accumulated lack of adequate recuperation that creates a widening gap between the energy and capacity available to you and what's required for your body, brain and life to function well.

It's not a medical diagnosis, nor is it another name for allostatic load. Personal Energy Debt™ is a practical human-performance framework supported by several established areas of science. Research on allostasis and allostatic load shows how repeated adaptation to stress can contribute to cumulative physiological burden; occupational research demonstrates the importance of adequate recovery from work; and sleep-loss research shows measurable impairment in executive functions such as working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility—the very capabilities businesspeople rely upon to think, decide, adapt and lead.¹⁻⁴

In other words, recovery isn't the opposite of performance. It's part of what makes sustained, healthy, high-capacity living and longevity possible.

The Center Is Where You Can Experience It

Regenus Center has become an important part of The Energy-First Path™, but not everyone can get here all the time, and nor do I believe everyone should spend their life coming to a recovery center.
Quite the opposite.

The Center is a place to experience what I'm talking about. The Path is about learning how to live it.

At Regenus Center, we've created an environment where people can step out of constant expenditure and experience advanced approaches to recovery, regeneration and human performance. But eventually, you walk back out the door—and what happens during all the other hours of your week matters enormously.

That's why The Energy-First Path™ goes beyond recovery sessions. We're developing a practical approach that helps people understand their energy, restore what they're continually spending, create better rhythms between stress and recovery, establish personal energy infrastructure at their home and office… and organize their lifestyle to support greater capacity over time.

That's ultimately what I mean by Performance Lifestyle®: your lifestyle should be overwhelmingly health-promoting while enabling you to manage your energy, expand your capacity, pursue meaningful goals and enjoy a good quality of life.

A Personal Invitation to My Fellow Chamber Members

This is one of the reasons I'm excited to bring this conversation to the Morris County Chamber community.

We're a community of people who get things done. We own businesses, serve clients, lead organizations, manage teams, build professional practices and support families. There are a lot of people depending on us—and many of us have become very good at pushing ourselves to meet those demands.

I can't think of many people in this community who wouldn't benefit from putting energy higher on the priority list.

It's also why I'm changing the way I talk about what I do.

Rather than simply telling fellow Chamber members about my companies or the technologies we offer, I want to lead with the bigger message:

Put energy first.

Then let's talk about what that could actually mean for you—or for someone you know.

If you're a fellow Chamber member and this resonates, I'd genuinely enjoy meeting you. Let's schedule a one-on-one at Regenus Center.

Come see what we're doing, tell me what you're working toward and what's demanding your energy right now, and experience some of what has shaped The Energy-First Path™ firsthand.

No lecture. No obligation to become a client. Just a useful conversation between Chamber members about the primary resource that affects virtually everything else we're trying to accomplish.

And if what you learn is useful, share it. Chances are you know another business owner, professional, colleague, client, friend or family member who has become very good at pushing through too and dealing with tiredness almost all the time, fatigue, inflammation, and pain that is distracting and potentially holding them back.

For those who want to go deeper, I'm releasing The Energy-First Path™ webinar, coming in September 2026, that explores why so many capable people are tired so much of the time, what actually restores energy, and how to begin putting energy first in real life—for better human performance and a better quality of life.

Learn more and watch for the upcoming webinar at www.theenergyfirstpath.com.

Maybe the next evolution in business performance isn't another productivity system. Maybe it's developing a Performance Lifestyle®—your personal energy management system—so you can live as a healthy, high-capacity human capable of thinking, feeling, looking, functioning and performing more like a much younger version of yourself, while enjoying a better quality of life for longer.

Because everything we're trying to accomplish—in business and in life—requires energy.
It's time we put it first.
