The Biggest Mistake Successful Professionals Make: Trying to Solve an Energy Problem with Psychology6/25/2026 By John Allen Mollenhauer “JAM”, Founder Performany & the Regenus Center Every day, successful professionals wake up focused on goals: Growing the business. Leading the team. Serving clients. Increasing revenue. Supporting their family. Making an impact. What many don't realize is that every one of those objectives requires energy: Building a business costs energy. Leading people costs energy. Making decisions costs energy. Pursuing a mission costs energy. The more successful, ambitious, and responsible you become, the more energy your life demands. Yet most people never learn how to manage that reality. Instead, they slowly drift into what I call personal energy debt—a growing gap between the energy their life demands and the energy available to support it.
Because the decline is gradual, they often don't recognize what's happening. When energy begins to decline, they assume they have a psychology problem—a motivation problem, a discipline problem, a productivity problem, or a mindset problem. So, they push harder.
Instead of creating more energy and freedom, they often create more stress and fatigue, eventually burning out as they cope with declining energy in ways that create even more depletion. Not because they're doing something wrong. But because they don't know the actual problem they need to solve—or how to solve it. And nowhere is this truer than when it comes to human energy. Most successful people have learned how to achieve their goals. Few have learned how to revitalize their body and brain, restore capacity, and sustain it so they can continue achieving their goals without sacrificing their health. The reality is that many of the challenges professionals face—fatigue, overwhelm, poor motivation, lack of clarity, stress, and burnout—are human performance challenges. And many human performance challenges are energy challenges first. That's why I believe energy must come first. Before nutrition, before fitness, before psychology and so forth. Not because energy is the goal. It's not. But because energy is what makes human performance—and all of your capabilities—possible. When energy improves…
The solution isn't abandoning your ambitions. The solution is building the biological capacity required to fulfill them without sacrificing your health and well-being in the process. That's why, at Performany, I teach an Energy-First approach to human performance—and the lifestyle that makes it possible. Because energy alone isn't the whole solution. Energy is the starting point. The ultimate solution is learning how to live in a way that supports sustained energy, healthy high performance, meaningful achievement, and lasting well-being. Because before sustainable success comes sustained energy. And before sustained energy comes learning how to restore it, expand it, and manage it like a professional. If you'd like to learn more about the Energy-First Path and the lifestyle that makes it possible, stay connected through my Beehiiv newsletter--The RE Generation. I look forward to helping you build the energy, performance, and capacity required to achieve your goals—without sacrificing your health and well-being. ~ JAM
