By Gennifer Biggs, Exigent Technologies A new year brings fresh goals — growth targets, operational improvements, and a renewed focus on efficiency. Yet one area many small and midsize businesses still approach reactively is technology. Too often, technology decisions are made in response to problems instead of as part of a broader business strategy. The most successful organizations flip that script. They treat technology as a growth enabler, not just a utility. As we head into the new year, here are four practical business resolutions that can help small business leaders strengthen security, control costs, support their teams, and build a more resilient foundation for growth. Resolution #1: Strengthen Security With Policies, Not Tools
Cybersecurity conversations usually start with tools — firewalls, endpoint protection, or multifactor authentication. But in reality, the foundation of strong security isn’t software. It’s people. Nearly 90% of security incidents involve human error. Without clear expectations, even well-meaning employees can unintentionally put your business at risk. That’s why effective IT security policies are essential. They turn your workforce into a “human firewall” by providing clarity, accountability, and consistency. At a minimum, every business should review and maintain core policies covering acceptable technology use, password standards, multi-factor authentication requirements, onboarding and offboarding processes, remote work and device use, and data retention and disposal. These policies don’t need to be complicated — in fact, simpler is better. Make it a habit to review and refresh policies annually, communicate the “why” behind them, and reinforce them through onboarding and ongoing training. When policies align with how your team actually works, security improves without slowing productivity. The better question is: Why are we investing in this technology, and how does it support our goals? That distinction matters. A budget without a strategy leads to reactive spending, unnecessary tools, and delayed modernization. A strategy-first approach, on the other hand, aligns technology investments with business priorities — whether that’s growth, efficiency, risk reduction, or customer experience. High-performing organizations build an IT roadmap that looks two to three years ahead. This allows leaders to plan for lifecycle replacements, security improvements, and modernization initiatives in a predictable way, rather than being surprised by emergency expenses. This approach allows budgeting to become intentional, predictable, and aligned with long-term objectives — transforming technology from a cost center into a growth engine. Resolution #3: Empower Your Internal Team Instead of Overloading Them For those companies that have invested in internal IT teams, you may have noticed they are overwhelmed. Between cybersecurity threats, cloud platforms, compliance requirements, constant monitoring alerts, and IT projects, even strong IT staff struggle to keep up. Backlogs grow, burnout increases, and critical initiatives stall. This is where co-managed IT comes into play. Co-managed IT is not outsourcing, and it’s not staff replacement. It’s a partnership model that augments internal teams with additional expertise, coverage, and capacity. For many midsized businesses experiencing high-growth periods, co-managed IT can be the perfect bridge from fully managed IT support to a solution that pairs your small tech staff with a trusted partner to create an effective response to growing IT needs. By leveraging a co-managed approach, businesses gain access to specialized skills, project support, and operational stability without the cost and delay of hiring full-time staff. Internal teams stay in control while gaining the reinforcement they need to deliver better outcomes. For growing organizations, co-managed IT offers a smarter path forward — one that protects institutional knowledge, reduces risk, and helps teams focus on higher-value work. Resolution #4: Build a Technology Roadmap Aligned with Business Plans Growth doesn’t happen by accident — and neither should technology decisions. A technology roadmap provides clarity about what to prioritize, when to invest, and how each initiative supports broader business goals. Without one, businesses often chase shiny new tools while foundational issues remain unresolved. An effective roadmap includes security priorities, infrastructure stability goals, modernization initiatives, lifecycle planning, and forward-looking technologies that support collaboration and efficiency. Just as importantly, it’s reviewed and refined regularly — not created once and forgotten. When technology planning and business strategy are aligned, organizations operate with greater confidence, predictability, and resilience – technology begins to power potential and future success instead of being reactive and disruptive. A Smarter Way to Start the Year These four resolutions share a common theme: Intention. Businesses that plan proactively, align technology with goals, and invest in people — not just tools — are better positioned for long-term success. The new year is an opportunity to reset. With the right strategy, structure, and partners in place, technology can become one of your strongest competitive advantages.
